STORYLINE-

Iron Man 2 Video Game is a 2010 video game loosely based on the film of the same name. It was released on May 4, 2010, days after the film’s international release and days before the film’s domestic release. The game was published by Sega and developed by Secret Level (Xbox 360 & PlayStation 3), High Voltage Software (Wii & PlayStation Portable) and Gameloft (Wireless).

Iron Man 2 Video Game features the voices of Don Cheadle and Samuel L. Jackson, reprising their roles from the movie, and Lamb of God recorded an exclusive song for the game, “Hit The Wall.” Additionally, the game has an original story written by The Invincible Iron Man scribe Matt Fraction. Iron Man 2 Video Game story is set after the plot of the movie, while the iPhone version sticks roughly to the movie’s plot.

The Iron Man 2 game has received generally unfavorable reviews, with Metacritic scores of 44 and 45 out of 100 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions, respectively. There is division among critics as to whether or not the game is an improvement over its predecessor. IGN gave a score of 5.1 for the PS3 and Xbox 360 version, 5.5 for the Wii version and 4.9 for the PSP version. They felt the game was an improvement upon the original, but still did not quite hit the mark, citing poor graphics, a five-hour playing time, repetitive dodging and action, and a lack of challenge, which made the upgrade system unnecessary; “Iron Man 2 isn’t terrible, but it rarely gets exciting. It’s fun to blow up tanks and trucks, and Iron Man has all his powers like his repulsor shots and his unibeam laser. But the whole Iron Man 2 game feels repetitive. You see the same enemies over and over again, and even though they get bigger guns and more armor as you go, the gameplay stays the same. The PSP version features even fewer guys than the Wii game, so a lot of times areas just seem empty because there aren’t artillery trucks rolling up and dumping out bad guys.”

Michael Lafferty from GameZone gave it a 4.5, suggesting that players should “Watch the movie, read the comic book, but pass on the game.” GameSpot also gave it a 4.5, arguing that “every decent element is overshadowed by stumbles and shortcomings. It should be thrilling and fun to take to the sky in a superpowered battle suit, but Iron Man 2 crashes to the Earth with a dull thud.” Empire magazine gave it one star, calling it a “rare failure for Sega,” and stating that the experience felt like an early PlayStation 1 game.

Tony Stark dawns the shiny red and yellow armor in Sega’s tie-in game for the Iron Man film. The game begins with an origin story like the film but, quickly deviates from the movies narrative and establishes its own. Iron man is pitted against several of his comic book foes. Each level of the game begins and ends with a cut-scene that shows Iron Man interacting briefly with another character and then zipping off to his next location. Robert Downey Jr. and Terrance Howard from the film lend their likenesses to the characters and provide the voice acting.

Graphics

Players will complete a short tutorial to get them started. The tutorial is linear but, the rest of the game’s missions feature open battlefields where players are free to wreak mayhem on the enemy. The levels are large and well made. The visuals are truly great. Flying around the large open spaces is one of the games best features. The suit animations are also a sight to behold.

Gameplay

The games combat however, is not as well done. The game’s implementation of Iron Man’s signature missiles and repulsor beam are very useful but not very fun to use. The gameplay trips overs itself in many spots. The fast flying fun that players are looking for is not a very effective way of dispatching enemies. The best tactic ends up being to hover over enemies and spam your repulsor while you wait for the missile attack to recharge and dodging the missiles the enemies fire in return. Being efficient at combat is very limiting and destroys the fun factor with tedium. The games horrible difficulty spike midway through the game almost forces the player into this mechanic for the duration of the experience.

For this reason, Iron Man is only moderately entertaining, and it only remains so for the first few hours of gameplay. Once the difficulty spike hits the things turn sour. Each level seems to be copied from the same template. You will take out groups of targets, then move on to destroy a super weapon or to fight a supervillain. The most variety the game offers on this formula is that occasionally it will have you take out a super weapon and a supervillain in the same mission. This formulaic routine cannot sustain most players interest through the games 13 levels. The second half of these missions is exceedingly frustrating. There are no checkpoints to divide the lengthy missions in the latter half of the game. The result is that player failure is punished by restarting the level from the beginning.

Conclusion

Iron man might appear shiny and glossy on the outside but, internally it has some major system malfunctions. It tries to separate itself from the stigma of being another movie inspired game by upping the difficulty. However, the game is just another movie inspired title and the gameplay is uninspired.

Sega’s high flying super-powered move tie-in for the Marvel Universe film falls flat due to it uneven difficulty and uninspired level design.
